The fact that crying is healthy is not just about emotions. Did you know that there are 3 different types of tears?

  • Basal tears continuously keep your eyes moist.
  • Reflex tears brush your eyes, as it were. (Eg if you cry when you cut an onion.)
  • Emotional tears process emotions.

Every kind of crying or every kind of tear therefore has its own function. But emotional tears are unique to humans. Animals do produce basal and reflex tears for the maintenance of their eyes, but do not have emotional tears. But who knows, one day the opposite will be proven.

A cry is not always pleasant to experience, but there is a reason why mother nature has provided us with this possibility. Crying remains something of a mystery even to science, yet there are several mechanisms that explain why crying can be good for us.

Humans are social creatures and your tears are an important form of communication. Your friends or family can immediately see that you are not feeling well and can come to the rescue. Someone who cries is just as attractive as a cute kitten, other people immediately feel the urge to cuddle and comfort you.

That is why it is so important not to be ashamed of your tears and not to isolate yourself. Emotions are allowed and your friends and family only want the best for you. Dare to be vulnerable and learn to accept help and support from others.

2. Crying air

When you cry, you feel a lot of emotion and tension. Emotions are stored in the body in all kinds of ways and cause a significant build-up of tension over days, weeks or even years. Just think of tense shoulders in someone who is very stressed. But your diaphragm, for example, also stores a lot of emotional energy .

By crying you release your body of this emotional and physical tension and you really feel lighter.

3. Brings calm

Crying activates the parasympathetic nervous system. That is the part of the nervous system that is responsible for “rest and digest”. Normally this should be in balance with the sympathetic part, which is responsible for stress .

Unfortunately, we live in such a busy and stressful environment that some people are constantly "on" and unable to relax . And if you don't sound the alarm yourself, the body will do it for you with a big cry.

Your tear fluid contains enzymes, proteins, minerals , hormones and all kinds of substances that your body produces in stress situations. Crying can be a way to get rid of these stress substances and restore the balance in the body. This is not fully scientifically proven, but it is a plausible theory that shows why crying is healthy.

Crying not only helps to process negative emotions, but is also said to stimulate the production of endorphins . Endorphins are a feel-good hormone and act as a natural pain reliever.

How wonderful that nature has provided that we can feel good again after a bad experience. It shows that life can't always be roses and moons, but after rain there is always sunshine.
